New and old hardware

It is a great idea to use new hardware like knobs, handles, or drawer pulls to give a furniture piece a new look. That can be the most fun part at times. I highly recommend looking at clearance hardware at Anthropologie. It is always unique and can be reasonable. I have only paid full price for a few knobs there. But, they are all lovely.

The hoosier cabinet is not getting new hardware. I really wanted to cut down on the amount of money I was going to put out to complete this project since it is taking soooo much time.  So, it is getting it's old hardware back!

The original hardware had layers of paint on it. Even the flat screws had to be soaked with varnish remover or liquid stripper before I could removed them with a screw driver. Once I was able to remove the handles and such, I stuck them and the screws in a mason jar and covered it with this:

Mostenbocker's PVR is biodegradable and water-based. I still wore gloves because it could dry my hands out and it is not intended for my skin. The scent is fresh and citrus-y.

I left the hardware in the jar for almost a week. It didn't need that much time, but I was not able to get to it for a few days. I rinsed it off in water and used an old toothbrush to help scrub the sludge away.

Tah-dah! New "old" hardware!

Hoosier cabinet base

Some of you may grow tired of this hoosier cabinet. I apologize if I end up blogging about it too much. But, you see, it is taking a lot of my creative time.

However, I must say, that I never, Never, get bored of re-finishing furniture. There are times I wish I was done sanding or stripping a particular piece so I can move on to the painting, the distressing, the sealing, or, delivering it to the owner.

-I am writing this post without inserting the photos because I am charging the camera battery. I think I am very visual and need to see the photos while I type! -

We moved the base into the house so I could seal it (yes, in the house!), attach the hardware, and bring up the hutch or top piece.

I am pretty pleased with the progress. Some of the first few layers are showing through because I did not strip it down to the bare wood: 1. I don't think the wood was nice enough and 2. It would have taken months and months- I am certain.

So, now, I am waiting for it to warm up a bit to begin stripping the hutch.

Oh so busy!

I have tons to do and I am sure you all do as well! Especially with the new year and all the goals or resolutions that we make. Plus, the first week of January means we will all be really disciplined in attaining our goals. :)

Well, I am trying to get some things done so I can take photos and show you. Until then, please check out this blog and enter a give-away. ( I am! )  Creative Juices decor is giving away some paint that will be great on a furniture re-do. Even if you have never re-done a piece of furniture, enter! What better motivation than that?! And, if you live near Staunton, VA, I wil totally help you.

Back to work!
