New and old hardware

It is a great idea to use new hardware like knobs, handles, or drawer pulls to give a furniture piece a new look. That can be the most fun part at times. I highly recommend looking at clearance hardware at Anthropologie. It is always unique and can be reasonable. I have only paid full price for a few knobs there. But, they are all lovely.

The hoosier cabinet is not getting new hardware. I really wanted to cut down on the amount of money I was going to put out to complete this project since it is taking soooo much time.  So, it is getting it's old hardware back!

The original hardware had layers of paint on it. Even the flat screws had to be soaked with varnish remover or liquid stripper before I could removed them with a screw driver. Once I was able to remove the handles and such, I stuck them and the screws in a mason jar and covered it with this:

Mostenbocker's PVR is biodegradable and water-based. I still wore gloves because it could dry my hands out and it is not intended for my skin. The scent is fresh and citrus-y.

I left the hardware in the jar for almost a week. It didn't need that much time, but I was not able to get to it for a few days. I rinsed it off in water and used an old toothbrush to help scrub the sludge away.

Tah-dah! New "old" hardware!
